Spooky games for Halloween: Day 6
Fear is something that all people experience. Not everyone is afraid of the same things however. Some people are scared of the dark, or scared of monsters, or scared of clowns. One common fear is acrophobia, the fear of heights. If you are one of these unfortunate people, this next game might not be for you. Shadow of the Colossus came out in 2005, released by Sony Computer Entertainment. Technically an action/adventure game, it manages to become something all together...bigger...than that.

You play the role of a young man who is on a quest to restore the life of a girl named Mono. To do this you must wander through a forbidden land fighting 16 giant beasts simply known as colossi. The thing about this game that sets it apart from other open-world adventure games is that there are no towns, no people, no enemies to interact with. At all. Nothing but the colossi. Does that sound boring to you? Well then let's put this in perspective. You are galloping along on your trusty steed looking for a monster to slay, but there is a mountain in your way. So you start climbing the mountain, and it suddenly stands up. That's when you realize that you are on the foot of a sky-scraper-sized colossus and you are tickling him. Now all you have to do is figure out how to kill it. Don't worry, there is absolutely nothing boring about this game.

Shadow of the Colossus is really more of a puzzle game than anything else, because you have to figure out how to slay something that can barely see you because you are so, so tiny. By the time you've killed 15 other colossi you think you've seen it all, but nothing can prepare you for the bone chilling moment when you come eye to eye with the final boss. This is a truly breath-taking game in its scope and imagination. Not to mention the award winning soundtrack and beautiful graphics. If you have not already played this game, do yourself a favor and check out the newest re-release on PS3. If you can beat this game, you should be able to cure a fear of heights no problem.
